As a fishing guide and tournament bass fisherman Wayne was always looking for a lure that would catch fish when they were not biting. It occurred to him that virtually all fishing lures neither looked like a real minnow nor did they swim like a real minnow. After watching a couple of thousand fish look at his bait or follow it to the boat and refuse to bite, it occurred to him that using cartoon minnows, spinning blades and other unnatural looking lures, that bore no realistic resemblance to anything in nature, might be part of the problem. The fact that the action of all the existing fishing lures at that time were totally unnatural and mechanical or repetitive made the problem worse. He wondered what would happen if one was to design a fishing lure that actually looked and swam like a real minnow.

Up until this time people designed lures by figuring out how they could create movement or action and then built whatever type body would adapt to their action or movement design. Wayne took the opposite approach. He wanted a minnow that looked exactly like a real minnow, and then tried to figure out how he would create movement. Over a period of years, and many failures, my efforts resulted in a lure that actually looked and swam like a real fish. he started to win a lot of tournaments and could catch fish in the worst conditions, and then a funny thing happened. He discovered that he got twice as many bites when the lure was stopped or slowly sinking after a few jerks. It dawned on him that something other than realistic look and swimming movement was provoking the fish to bite. Continued experiments revealed the truth. When fished in a series of tight short jerks with a pause in between, my minnow looked and acted exactly like a crippled or wounded minnow. By sheer accident he had discovered that he could make fish bite that were not hungry. The concept of genetic response was born. Knowing that he had stumbled onto something that was revolutionary, and decided to market the bait.

A lure that looked exactly like a real minnow, swam like a real minnow and died with the spastic action of a real minnow. The final creation was the Banjo Minnow and the rest is History. How to Fish The Banjo Minnow
The most life like fishing lure ever created!

The Banjo Minnow is not reeled in like a conventional lure. It must be retrieved with short quick jerks. After each short, quick jerk, the rod tip should snap back towards the lure..... creating slack in the line. This slack allows the lure to move in different directions creating random directional action. There should be a pause between each jerk. That is when the strike will come and the slack allows the bait to be inhaled. (It is important to allow the bait to be sucked backwards into the fishes mouth, otherwise it can miss the hook). When a person becomes comfortable with the stop and go action and creating slack line, they can then try and put a wiggle in the jerk.

In other words the jerk is made up of a number of tiny mini jerks. This makes the Banjo Minnow swim. It is not necessary to make most fish bite, but once the swimming action is learned the Banjo becomes undetectable from a real injured bait fish.
